Related issue #4: To what extent should i, as a citizen respond to globalization?
1. Human rights and democracy. How has democracy and human rights shaped and been shaped by globalization?
Human rights should be universal unfortunately, in many cases around the world, this is not true. Even if human rights are protected by law in these countries, people often ignore them and exploit their fellow human beings.
-Universal declaration of human rights was created after WW ll by the UN to stop anything like the holocaust from ever happening again. The main fact is that "human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." It's split up into 6 sections: political rights, civil rights, equality rights, economic rights, social rights, and cultural rights.
-How are Ideas about Human Rights and Democracy Related? Democracy and Human Rights go hand in hand because in a Democracy the governments job is to protect and provide the citizens their basic human rights. Countries with a non-democratic government tend to have less rights, and those with a democratic government tend to have more rights. This is shown in our own government; we have a democratic government and also the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which protects our many rights.
-How are Globalization, Human Rights, and Democracy Related? These three things are related to each other, because they all are affected by one another. When globalization advances, so does human rights and democracy. Globalization - via transnational corporations - has a history of ignoring and exploiting human rights on a regular basis with barely any consequences. This creates the need for a more universal way of protecting human rights for everyone, regardless of where in the world they live. Globalization also affects democracy because it determines whether laws are created or removed. An example of this would be transnationals that enter a developing country; if the government considers improving working conditions or minimum wage, the corporation threatens to leave.
2. Quality of life: How has global awareness affected quality of life?
-HOW HAS GLOBALIZATION AFFECTED AWARENESS OF ISSUES?
Thomas Friedman, an editorial writer for the New York Times, delivers a mixed verdict on the Internet, a tool that many Canadians rely on to understand the world. Friedman argued that “at its best, the Internet can educate more people faster than any other media tool we ever had. At its worst, it can make people dumber faster than any other media tool we ever had.” He goes on to point out that uninformed people “don’t realize the Internet at its ugliest is an open sewer: an electronic conduit for untreated, unfiltered information.” Without question, the Internet an important tool in the globalizing process has provided many people with opportunities to make global connections. But for critics like Thomas Friedman, these opportunities to present information also represent opportunities to reinforce ignorance. Information drawn from the Internet often lacks context and may be unreliable. On any controversial topic, a search will locate a range of points of view and perspectives. It is sometimes hard to judge which points of view are
thoughtful, unbiased, and based on sound research and logic.
- HOW HAS GLOBAL AWARENESS AFFECTED GENDER ISSUES?
Over the past several decades, awareness of gender roles has steadily increased. Many countries have taken steps to reduce the gender gap, the social, economic, and political differences that separate men and women.Actions have included guaranteeing human rights for females, increasing access to education for girls, and improving health care for girls and women. The importance of this trend was noted in 1984 when the United Nations set up the Development Fund for Women to promote gender equality and empowerment initiatives for women. Yet many analysts agree that progress toward gender equality has been slow and inconsistent. A 2005 study by the World Economic Forum measured the extent to which women in 58 countries had achieved equality with men in terms of economics, politics, education, and health care.
-HOW HAS GLOBAL AWARENESS AFFECTED LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT ISSUES?
Canadians enjoy cheap bananas because of trade connections between this country and banana-producing countries such as Ecuador. But the bananas that arrive in Canadian supermarkets are often produced at a high cost to workers in many banana-producing countries. More and more people are
becoming aware of intricate connections and relationships like these and some are uncomfortable with what they reveal.

3. How does global connections affect people?
-HOW DOES GLOBALIZATION CHANGE COMMUNITIES?
A community is made up of people who identify with others through shared connections. The connection may be shared religious beliefs and traditions or a common language — or it may be less formal. Wearing the colors of a particular sports team, for example, and cheering on that team at games identifies fans as members of a particular community. The connection people share may be geographic — living in a village, town, or big-city neighborhood. Belonging to communities is important to people’s identity and helps define who they are. To what communities do you belong? Globalization has affected the communities people identify with. Contemporary communication technologies and the speed of transportation mean that people can identify with others from all over the world. The Asian tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands of people in December 2004 reminded many people of their shared connections. As the rest of the world
heard about the disaster, people rushed to donate emergency supplies and money because they believed that part of their global community needed help and support. Globalization has made the term “global community” more meaningful than ever

HOW DOES THE GLOBAL NEED FOR RESOURCES AFFECT PEOPLE?
In a globalized world, the need for resources is great. Some resources, such as oil and water, are so valuable that some governments are willing to use force to secure their supply. Though the study of historical globalization reveals that using force to secure resources is not a new strategy, it has taken
new forms in the 21st century.

HOW DOES GLOBALIZATION AFFECT PEOPLE’S HEALTH?
A pandemic is an epidemic that spreads around the world. Medical experts today are concerned that pandemics pose a more serious threat than ever because of people’s ability to travel farther and faster than ever before. But pandemics are nothing new, as the Black Death and the Spanish flu show.

4.To what extent should i embrace global citizenship?
WHAT DOES GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP MEAN?
You and most of your classmates are probably Canadian citizens. But what does Canadian citizenship mean? It could mean you were born in Canada or born somewhere else to Canadian parents. It could also mean that you have immigrated to Canada and become a citizen through the
naturalization process.Your citizenship represents a legal status that is officially designated by
a variety of documents. You may have a Canadian passport, a Canadian birth certificate, or a statement of citizenship from the courts. Your citizenship status can be defined and checked. With this legal recognition of citizenship come specific rights and responsibilities.

WHAT DOES A GLOBAL CITIZEN DO?
Global citizens assume responsibility for making globalization work in a way that benefits as many people, in as many situations, as possible. This idea may seem overwhelming until it is examined in light of individuals, such as Wangari Maathai, who are doing things on a small and large scale in a globally responsible manner.

WHAT IS MY ROLE IN THE GLOBALIZING WORLD?
The Canadian philosopher John Ralston Saul said, “Democracy is the only system capable of reflecting the humanist premise of equilibrium or balance. The key to its secret is the involvement of the citizen.” Do you
think this statement also applies to global citizens? Some argue that the problems of the world are just too big and overwhelming for individuals to make a difference. But Mother Theresa, a Catholic nun who dedicated her life to helping people living in deep poverty, disagreed. She said, “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But if that drop was not in the ocean, I think the
ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”

5. My definition of globalization
My definition of globalization could be worded as globalization is the process of growing and expanding to exist throughout the entire world.
-How do i feel about globalization: Honestly i believe globalization is a very positive thing in today's society, there is always room for new changes. For example development in tech look how it helps us in our everyday lives. On the flip side globalization is always good, for example destroying cultural diversity. Or industrialization globalization leaving a huge ecological footprint on our environment. What i'm trying to say here is that not one thing can be perfect, there always going to have there negatives and positives and globalization is a perfect example of this.
